Queen Zubaydah of the famous king Harun al-Rashid of the Abbasid dynasty of Baghdad was very fond of listening to stories and storytellers were regarded with great dignity in her court. Alif Laila is the name of a famous book of stories. All the stories of this book were narrated by Shahrzad Wazirzadi of Samarkand to his sister whose name was Dunyazad in one thousand and one nights. Later this book became so popular that it was translated into many languages like English, French, Arabic, Persian etc.
There is a tradition that Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya fell ill once. When the illness dragged on, his disciple Khas Amir Khusro started narrating an interesting story to him in Farsi by pressing the feet of his murshid. After this story ended with his recovery after several days, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya prayed that any sick person to whom this story is narrated will surely recover. This story was written by Mir Aman Dehlavi under the historical name of Bagh wa Bihar in Urdu from the platform of Fort William College Calcutta in 1802 from Dr. John Gilchrist’s Emma. Urdu prose is also officially started from Fort William College, Calcutta. Apart from Jahan Mir Aman, Haider Bakhsh Haidari wrote “Darshaan Mahfil” and “To Ta Kahani”, Khalil Khan Ashq wrote Dastan-e Amir Hamza and Mazhar Ali Villa in Haft Gulshan in 1801. Apart from these, many stories were written, but in all these stories, due to its unique style of narration and smooth and clear language, Bagh and Bihar got the most popular status. The society of Delhi is described in Bagh and Bihar. In contrast, Rajab Ali Beg Sarwar Lucknowi wrote “Fasana Ujab” (1825 AD), which is a reflection of the civilization and culture of Lucknow.
